TRAINING, EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION GMI and PIANC sign collaboration agreement The Global Marina Institute (GMI) and PIANC, the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure, have signed an agreement of cooperation to enhance the training of marina managers, designers and other marina professionals for best practice. The agreement was signed by Mick Bettesworth, GMI chairman, and Louis Van Schel, PIANC secretary-general. GMI and PIANC will specifically be working together to ensure greater alignment of the GMI Intermediate and Advanced marina management courses and the PIANC Marina Designer training programme. GMI will look to use PIANC guidance and expertise in the continued development of its courses. Commenting on the agreement, Mick Bettesworth said: “The opportunity to work more closely with PIANC will enable GMI to continue to provide internationally relevant marina training and certification across the world.” Louis Van Schel added: “This MoU follows others signed by PIANC with the main organisations of professionals interested in the marina market. This is very important under social, economic Hands-on training for fire and pollution emergencies As part of its safety policy and the process of putting its Plan for Emergencies in place, STP Shipyard Palma carried out an emergency drill in February that included a toxic spillage into the sea, a fire on board a moored boat and the rescue of an injured person. The drill brought staff up to date with current knowledge and enabled them to practice coordination, speed of response and fire-extinguishing techniques. During the drill, STP pioneered a new digital communications system, which made it possible to alert all departments via an alarm signal and establish a channel for coordinating the emergency. Prior to the day, staff from various departments who work every day on the shipyard hard standing, reviewed the Plan for Emergencies in order to receive theoretical training and also had practical training in how to care for injured people in emergencies and how to use emergency resources. While the theory centred on reviewing past drills and going through the guidelines in the self-protection manuals for the various teams of staff, the practical work trained them in the use of equipment such as the fire engine to deal with an emergency. Finally, the drill gave all staff members an opportunity to demonstrate their reaction and coordinating abilities and to assess the effectiveness of the exercise by logging timings. In this regard, the MoU aims to enforce a truly educative network programme to enhance best practice in developing safe and sustainable infrastructure, avoiding substandard results to the final users.” Also important was the work done to coordinate with external organisations: the Balearic Islands Ports Authority; Palma Fire Brigade; Harbourmaster; Civil Guard; and Balearic Islands Emergency Service - 112, all of which took part. At the end of the drill, the participants discussed all that had taken place with Andreu Munar, the training manager of Palma Fire Brigade, and his team. It was illuminating for those present to observe how, in response to an emergency, an organised chain of action takes place: from putting out the fire, to keeping the boats on the water safe, to protecting bystanders from harm, and also looking after staff members who are responding to the emergency, with constant support from the Occupational Risk Prevention team to avoid accidents. One of STP Shipyard Palma’s priorities is to keep its staff and facilities safe, and as a result it is one of the safest shipyards in Europe.
