GLOBAL REVIEW 2016 Portonovi Marina, due to open this year in Montenegro, will feature a range of berths up to megayacht size. Collaboration was the name of the game Last year was one of acquisitions and collaborations, with expansion – both in berth numbers and sizes – the prevailing focus. Charlotte Niemiec highlights some regional developments. Developments in Europe remained strong last year, despite uncertainty across the region. In the UK, developers of the new Victoria Marina waterfront in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, progressed the project after completing a new outer breakwater. The plans for the marina allow for a new, landscaped square centred on the Victoria Barracks, with new amenities and affordable homes set against the backdrop of the 400-berth marina. On the mainland, plans were submitted for a £19 million, 400- berth marina and associated facilities in Stourport on the River Severn. The development will include 108 holiday apartments, a marina club house with restaurant, a bar, gym, boat hire and sales facility. MDL’s Chatham Marina on the River Medway in Kent was also set to undergo a £500,000 expansion to include the addition of 54 new berths. In London, Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&NM) was appointed to take over the management and operation of St Katharine Docks, the finest marina in central London. The marina was to be carefully refurbished, restored and relaunched later in the year under the C&N brand, with 170 new berths for vessels up to 40m (131ft). It now nears completion (see World News). Also in the UK, The Marine Group – owners and operators of 350-berth Cardiff Marina and 160- berth Aberystwyth Marina – expanded the size of its boatyard at Cardiff Marine Village to become the largest facility of its kind in Wales. Planning permission was also secured to double the size of the existing drystack facility which, at the time, had racking for 110 vessels. Significant progress is being made (see World News). In Croatia, Marinetek NCP was appointed to reconfigure and rebuild Marina Kornati, one of the biggest and busiest marinas in the country. The contract involved removing the old jetties and installing a new floating pontoon system. And in Dubrovnik, the company built Veljko Barbieri Slano Marina, the first marina to be built by the Adriatic Croatia International Club (ACI) in 18 years and the 22nd in its portfolio. The 200 berth marina for vessels up to 20m (66ft) in length was completed in June and opened in early August. In Italy, Marina d’Arechi, the 560- berth marina in Salerno on the Amalfi coast, significantly increased its mooring capacity further to completing Five tree-lined marinas form the focus at Marasi Business Bay in Dubai.
