EDUCATION & TRAINING

EDUCATION & TRAINING Hogan takes the helm at GMI When Superior Group CEO John Hogan took over the role of Global Marina Institute (GMI) chair last November, he freely admitted he had “big shoes to fill”. Outgoing chair, Mick Bettesworth CMM, had steered the GMI since it was founded in 2011 and set it firmly on its path to delivering globally focused industry education. “As a result of Mick’s leadership, there is a steady growth in GMI endorsed training; both in numbers participating and in the number of countries now embracing the training,” Hogan explained. The quest to enhance GMI as “the pre-eminent brand for education in the industry” continues. Owned jointly on a not-for-profit basis by British Marine (UK) and the Marina Industries Association (Australia), the GMI helps run the industry’s respected and acknowledged Certified Marina Management (CMM) programme and influenced the decision to merge the UK-based and Australia-based Gold Anchor marina certification schemes into the new Global Gold Anchor industry standard. Standardisation has been a key focus. “We’ve worked hard on ‘commonality’,” Hogan told Marina World. “All the courses we run are to the same standard and specification no matter where they’re held.” This philosophy further boosted the professional credibility of the CMM programme, which has also been enhanced to offer a more thorough curriculum and is set to include more industry networking opportunities. Although the CMM course is the flagship, GMI has reached out to other industry professionals who are not hands-on marina managers and also given marina experts the chance to promote the market to bankers, valuers, fund managers etc., with two successful marina investment seminars. “We introduced the Certified Marina Professional (CMP) in 2013/14 and it’s gaining in strength,” Hogan acknowledged, fresh from awarding a CMP certificate to a European marina business development manager (see People). “We’re just about to roll out a Straddle Carrier Course as a GMI product and we’ve taken on the responsibility for the industry study tours previously run by the MIA. These need to be in different geographical markets and we plan to organise one a year,” he added. With programmes moving slowly into Asia and John Hogan strengthening in the Middle East, the GMI is shaping up to be a genuinely global offering although Hogan is aware that more air miles are needed. “We need to find an Asian director and we’re looking most particularly for a board member to represent the Americas,” he revealed. “This will make the GMI product available to even more people.” Further information at www.globalmarinainstitute.net Course success in Middle East Sixteen participants successfully completed the Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course held by the GMI in Abu Dhabi last December. Attendees came from as far afield as Turkey and Hong Kong but the majority arrived from the growing number of UAE and wider regional marinas. The course covered essential topics for effective marina management, including emergency and environmental management, finance, customer service and marinas of the future. Students conducted an analysis of three Abu Dhabi marinas and presented their findings as part of their assessment. The occasion was also a suitable platform to present two established marina managers, Evertt Ucat from Al Bandar Marina in Abu Dhabi and Andy Savill from JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort Marina in Dubai, with their CMM awards. These were presented by Farrokh Golchin, the GMI board member for the Middle East, and MIA CEO Colin Bransgrove. During 2017, IMI courses under the GMI banner will be held in Australia, Thailand and the UK, and possibly once again in the UAE.
