Michelle Hitchcock of MDL Marinas, officially became a Certified Marina Professional (CMP) and Can Akaltan became a Certified Marina Manager (CMM). The CMP programme was launched in 2012 to recognise the skills and experience of those working in the marina sector, but not directly managing marinas. Hitchcock, the first woman to be accredited to date, has worked at MDL Marinas in a variety of roles. She is now head of business development and is responsible for the company’s training development and delivery, the monitoring of customer service and quality, and overseeing all operational aspects of business systems at marinas in the UK, France, Italy and Spain. Upon receiving her certificate, she commented: “I am honoured and proud to be awarded my CMP accreditation by the GMI. This is a major highlight of my career, made more special as the presentation is in front of an audience of my peers at the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference.” Lesley Robinson, managing director of MDL Marinas, added: “We pride ourselves on the exceptional workforce that we have at MDL and it’s fantastic to see Michelle being recognised as a leading marina professional globally. She has worked very hard since she joined the company in 1999 and should also be very proud of becoming the first female to receive the award.” Can Akaltan left a successful career as a yacht captain to join Cesme L to r: Michelle Hitchcock, John Hogan and Can Akaltan. Marina in Izmir, Turkey as marina manager. He has since been promoted to the position of general manager. He was delighted to receive his CMM award. “I feel privileged to be awarded the only internationally recognised certificate in the marina industry for marina professionals,” he said. “It is also a great pleasure to become part of a very special group of industry pioneers.” John Hogan, newly elected chairman of the GMI, added: “It is good to have our first female CMP, particularly as she is from Europe, to add to those marina professionals already certified in Australia and Asia. I am hopeful that Michelle will pave the way for others who work in the industry to look to CMP as a way of developing and recognising their talents. It is also good to see another CMM recognised in Turkey.” The GMI currently has 130 active CMMs and CMPs around the globe and looks to continue this growth into 2017. British Marine contributes to this by running a series of GMI marina management courses in locations across the UK and Europe. For further information, visit: www.britishmarine. Training/Marina-Information Oscar Siches Oscar Siches, partner/manager of Pantalan del Mediterraneo and Moll Vell in Mallorca, has left the company to further develop his marina consultancy business and focus on special projects. “I believe that there is a big void in consulting on a small scale and for certain topics,” he told Marina World. “Many marina developers need advice on specific subjects and cannot afford a full consultancy job. I want to give these people the solutions they need, especially in design, environment, operations and marina-city interaction. These are the four major factors that determine a marina’s success in today’s marketplace.” Find out more about the tailor-made consultancy at or 66 - January/February 2017
