In many cases, it enables us to benefit from something we may not be able to purchase outright, e.g. a luxury car, and also gives us the option to upgrade more frequently. But, significantly, it also reduces the hassle of ownership. Research undertaken by Alex Parés (p.19) reveals a rise in charter and boat share practices via boat clubs, and many boat owners, according to boatsharefinder. org, have turned to boat sharing schemes as a way to spread costs and maximise enjoyment. There are many options, including: fractional ownership; boating syndicates; private boat share and managed boat share syndicates; membership schemes; and charter purchase. In July, Freedom Boat Club, which claims to be the largest and oldest boat club in the USA with 10,000 members in 19 states, added a dozen new franchise clubs in locations coast-to-coast. The club provides reciprocal access to 850 boats nationwide and attracts newcomers and seasoned boaters alike who prefer the convenience and cost savings that club membership offers. “The sharing economy and collaborative consumption trend is alive and well in the boat club sector as we continue to experience record-setting franchise and membership growth nationwide,” says Freedom Boat Club president and CEO, John Giglio. This view is supported by US boat-sharing company Boatsetter, which reported in October that it had secured over 165 marina partnerships. The company manages vessels that are privately owned and maintained but might rarely leave their slips. For a marina, increase in activity translates into income. Slip occupancy is guaranteed, fuel sales rise, and retail and dining outlets enjoy increased traffic. “It’s highly strategic,” explains Boatsetter CEO, Jaclyn Baumgarten. “If we get more people actively participating in boating, we end up stimulating the marine economy in a very significant way. Marinas, a major segment of the industry, see the long-term financial benefits of embracing boat-sharing.” The existing partnerships range from large groups to small regional and local facilities and the company has thousands of boat listings located in top destinations worldwide. The Boatsetter concept could ironically also help reverse the trend away from private boat ownership by making it more financially viable.
