BOAT MOVING & YARD

BOAT MOVING & YARD EQUIPMENT Swedish club invests in own machinery Trålhavets Boat Club in Åkersberga near Stockholm, Sweden, has saved time and money by investing in Swede Ship Sublift machines for launching and recovering boats at its busy site. Club secretary, Gunnar Lundell, explains how the club is benefiting. Trålhavets Boat Club is the second largest yacht club in Sweden with a total of 1,700 members, 1,200 boats and 700 berths in three basins. “Previously, we hired two mobile cranes for launching and hoisting our members’ boats,” Lundell says. “That solution was expensive.” Handling big boats in Grenada The newly installed 220 ton hoist at Clarkes Court Boatyard Marina in Grenada, delivered by Italian company Boat Lift, has been affectionately named ‘Hulk’. The machine features a 90° steering system and remote assistance system. An extended upper beam and trunnion pin enable it to haul vessels with different types of keel, e.g. sailboats, catamarans, tow-boats and superyachts. Clarkes Court general manager, Conor Holmes, sees great possibilities for the powerful new machine. “Our “In 2004 we investigated what a Sublift with 12 ton capacity would cost. We quickly realised that what we paid for the crane hire in a year was half the value of a Sublift and that it would return the investment in two years.” The club purchased two 12 ton capacity machines; a significant new marina aims to become a reference for big boat owners hoping to travel to Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique as we are now able to accommodate these types of vessels,” he says. “An increase in yachts to the island should also result in increased employment in the yachting sector in the area.” Boat Lift has also recently delivered a 75 ton hoist to Port Taverna in Corsica and is preparing to deliver its first machine to the USA – for Morris Yacht Beach Club in New York – and upgrade as cranes used in the past were limited to five tons apiece. But customers saw a new opportunity! “With two Sublifts in operation, suddenly our members’ boats became bigger,” Lundell confirms. “We were so pleased with the 12 ton machines that we added a larger 25 ton model so that we could lift even bigger boats.” Every nine years, the club sells an old machine and invests in a new Sublift in order to keep all fresh and modern but the time saved in handling operations also makes for good pay back. “When we launched a boat before, we first had a crane that lifted it on to a trailer pulled by a tractor that brought the boat down to the water. Then there was a second crane that lifted it off the trailer into the water. In the autumn, the process was reversed putting the boats back in their cradles. The launching was perceived as stressful and there is always a considerable risk when a boat is hanging high in the air below a crane.” “Now it’s easy to lift off the boat from the cradle and bring it straight into the water. It is also easier since the boat hoist moves smoothly and boats can be launched and up-slipped in no particular order. It is appreciated by the members,” Lundell adds.
