WORLD NEWS New Gold Anchor launch GLOBAL: The new Gold Anchor accreditation scheme, developed by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) and the Marina Industries Association (MIA) will be officially launched at METS 2015 on 17 th November. The scheme is the result of a year’s work to combine two independently-run anchor systems, and follows on from the announcement made in November 2014 that they would merge. UK-based TYHA and Australia-based MIA will jointly assess and administer the universal Gold Anchor scheme at a worldwide level. The scheme will reinforce the current Gold Anchor Growth for marina training GLOBAL: The Global Marina Institute (GMI) has noted positive growth in marina training over the 2015 period. The Marina Industries Association (MIA) saw numbers rise in course participation both out of Asia and Australia, and British Marine attendance was on par with 2014 GMI course participation. The institute sees this as a positive sign for the health of the marina and wider boating industries. GMI chairman, Mick Bettesworth, commented: “One of the very pleasing developments is the growing number of countries that are represented at GMI marina education courses. GMI courses at both Intermediate and Advanced level often attract almost half the delegates from outside of the UK and Australia. At MIA’s October Advanced Marina Management (AMM) course there were participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, New Zealand and Australia and British Marine’s AMM course in values with a clear focus on the quality of facilities, customer service, policies and procedures, environmental and overall ambiance. Fundamental to the delivery of the scheme will be the highly experienced assessor team, providing not only assessment against the scheme criteria but advice to marina managers in upholding and improving global marina standards. Amsterdam attracted delegates from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and the Caribbean.” The GMI sees this as a reflection of the growth of marina industries in eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This is further reflected in the fact that, for the first time, British Marine and MIA will run an Advanced course in Dubai in March 2016. Further details of all GMI training courses and certification pathways can be found at www. globalmarinaiminstitute.net Charterers welcome superyacht berths SPAIN: An expansion project to add seven new superyacht berths at Port Andratx in Mallorca is under way. Approval was granted by the Balearic Government Port Authority back in December 2014. The new berths are welcomed by resident charter company easyboats, as director Lorenzo Vila explains: “Not only is our business based in Port Andratx, but we were born and raised here, so we have seen the transformation from humble fishing village to millionaires’ and billionaires’ playground. While the fishing industry still very much exists, the port’s image is now very upscale with high-end restaurants, eight-figure price tag villas and superyachts on the scene. These new berths, which range between 26m [85.3ft] and 30m [98.4ft], are much needed and we’ve already reserved one for an easyboat client – who happens to be a billionaire from northern Europe.” At a budget of almost €2 million, the seven-berth expansion also adds 34 new car parking spaces. The extended quay offers the spin-off benefit of reducing the swell coming into the port for other marina users.
