WORLD NEWS Cardiff group buys West Wales marina UK: Cardiff Marine Group has purchased Aberystwyth Marina on the west coast of Wales and is preparing to undertake a number of phased investments to upgrade facilities. The Group, which has existing centres in Cardiff and Swansea, has experienced rapid growth over the past seven years, and offers an integrated approach to boat owners with an existing portfolio that includes 350-berth Cardiff Marina; 110 drystack berths in Cardiff; Cardiff Marine Village business park; and boatyards in Cardiff and Swansea. Cardiff Marine Group director, Christopher Odling-Smee, commented: “Our purchase of Aberystwyth Marina represents a long-term commitment to upgrading the marina. We strongly believe in the potential of the marina, which we consider to offer great opportunities for growth.” Planned works will see Van Oord dredge the marina basin; Walcon Marine supply a new pontoon configuration to improve layout and increase capacity; and additional contractors work to upgrade the infrastructure to improve presentation and security. To help with upgrades, the Group has been awarded £300,000 by the Coastal Communities Fund. This fund aims to encourage the economic development of UK coastal communities by awarding funding to create sustainable economic growth and jobs. Aberystwyth Marina was sold to its new owners by the specialist Parks, Sports and Marinas division of property advisors Colliers International on behalf of joint receivers Begbies Traynor. Colliers International has advised Cardiff Marine Group since its incorporation in 2007. Fisherman’s Wharf to be Macau highlight CHINA: Poralu Marine has replaced an old marina at Fisherman’s Wharf in Macau as part of an ongoing project spearheaded by Macau Legend Development. Macau is a small peninsula in mainland China, across the Pearl River delta from Hong Kong. The marina complements a 5-star hotel, the Landmark Macau Hotel, a convention centre and an international recreational area. The development is located on the peninsula’s external port and is a mark of the Government of Macau’s willingness to develop international business and leisure tourism. The site presented real technical challenges that included working with fixed posts from the previous marina system. It now has a fully recyclable aluminium pontoon system with Ecostyle polypropylene decking. Poralu Marine export sales manager, Virginie Segura, explained that the marina was part of a waterfront renewal programme that will put Macau in the spotlight. On this basis, a top design was required with emphasis on sustainability. Poralu carried out a study on the wave protection system before managing the entire marina project. www.marinaworld.com - November/December 2015 9
