WORLD NEWS Derwent expansion maximises Club potential AUSTRALIA: Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart, Tasmania, has completed a AU.5 million marina expansion. It is now able to host a variety of new sailing events and accommodate larger yachts wanting to stay in the area. Bellingham Marine worked closely with the Squadron for over a year to develop the optimal berth configuration and wave protection for the marina. “The goal was to provide the Squadron with a pontoon system that would allow the club to maximise its full potential,” said Mark Carney, area manager for Bellingham Marine Australia. “The pontoons and related infrastructure needed to be of high quality, yet affordable, be long lasting and easy to maintain, be able to handle the ongoing trend of bigger boats entering the market, and serve the club’s desire to operate as a venue for race events.” The result added 145 berths for vessels of 10 to 30m (33 to 98ft) with an option to convert 15m (49ft) berths to 18m (59ft) berths in the future with minimal modification. All berths have metered power and water. The marina extension, which has 650m (2,132ft) of new concrete floating walkways, was the first in Australia to fully utilise Bellingham’s FRP throughrod system. “We have done several retrofit projects but this is the first new construction project in Australia,” Carney confirmed. “We noticed a reduction in installation time with the new rods and are confident the rods will increase the system’s lifespan and reduce required maintenance.” The extension brings capacity at Derwent Sailing Squadron to 280 berths, which significantly helps meet a pent-up demand for berths in the area. PPP sought for Dana Point USA: The County of Orange, California, is soliciting Statements of Qualification from property development companies or teams for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) opportunity to revitalise Dana Point Harbor (see p. 30). Terms are offered on a 50-year lease and qualified respondents will be selected to participate in an upcoming Request for Proposal process. The selected finalist will be responsible for the design, permitting, funding, construction, renovation, operation and maintenance of specific land and water areas. Highlights of the PPP include demolition and reconstruction of certain areas of the 46-yearold harbour; reconstruction and expansion of its commercial area; renovation of the east and west basin marinas and guest slips; and expansion of the Marina Inn Hotel. The marinas currently have approximately 2,400 slips with an average length of just under 30ft (9m). CDP approvals are required for some elements. Dana Point Harbor is a 276-acre (111.7ha) public facility owned and operated by the County of Orange and located in the city of Dana Point. It enjoys excellent road access and proximity to surrounding communities that are densely populated by high earning households.
