WORLD NEWS Southern sells ‘first’ marina portfolio USA: Southern Marinas Holdings, a partnership between a New York-based private investment firm and Southern Marinas, has sold its portfolio of marinas to a publicly traded REIT. The move, prompted by increased interest in the investment appeal of marinas, does not, however, signal Southern’s departure from the marina sector. Fish-Tale Marina, Fort Myers Beach, Florida was included in the portfolio sale. Southern Marinas chief investment officer, Andrew Gendron, explained: “With the uncertainty surrounding the long-term investment strategy in some traditional core real estate including retail and office, the marina space has become increasingly interesting for Marinas21 postponed AUSTRALIA: Although Australia is experiencing a recreational boating boom, the continuing uncertainty around border closures and lockdowns has forced the Marina Industry Association (MIA) to postpone the Marinas21 International Conference & Trade Show scheduled for 24 th -25 th May 2021. It will now take place 23 rd -24 th May 2022. Mike Harvey, who has chaired the conference organising committee since 2007, said: “We are very disappointed to be postponing as all in the industry were really looking forward to catching up in person. Following long border closures throughout 2020, the last few months have seen snap lockdowns and regional closures and demonstrates the uncertainty we are likely to face until the vaccination roll out is well underway.” “We believe that it is in the best interests of the Association and private equity and public REITs looking to diversify their portfolios. In addition, the boating industry metrics are the strongest they have been in the past decade, and this trend is expected to continue in 2021 and beyond.” Southern Marinas Management is now focused on replicating its previous success with a follow-on platform to acquire premier marina properties across the country. “While we have a robust pipeline of potential acquisitions, we are always looking to find unique properties that will complement our new portfolio,” Gendron added. The principals of Southern Marinas have been involved in the acquisition and management of marinas and resort properties throughout the USA for more than 20 years. During their combined years in the marina sector, the team has evaluated over 100 marinas for purchase through an extensive underwriting process. exhibitors, who will invest significant resources in preparing for the event, to defer to a time when we believe there will be greater certainty and confidence around attendance and travel.” The Club Marine Marina of the Year Awards will, however, continue and will be held on 25 th May as planned. “We are working on a format for the Awards where we hope to coordinate meetings in various regions before beaming everyone together virtually for an Awards presentation over a few drinks,” confirmed MIA CEO Suzanne Davies. 62 YEARS OF MARINA INNOVATION.
