WORLD NEWS Rebuild and expansion at Shoreham UK: Walcon Marine has completed a two-stage project at Shoreham Port on the English south-east coast. The contract involved a complete rebuild of Lady Bee Marina and installation of a new facility in a freshly dredged area nearby. Lady Bee’s old pontoon system was replaced in the same three piers plus back walkway configuration but on a larger scale. Thirty-two fingers plus hammerheads created a total of 82 berths; 68 for Shoreham Port and 14 for the adjacent Sussex Yacht Club. Walcon’s Warrior and Wizard barges played a valuable role in the project by driving the piles and removing the old pontoons by water. The new facility is of identical configuration, with Walcon System 2000 pontoons installed to create 13 finger pontoons plus hammerheads. There is also additional berthing on the walkway. In total, 43 berths for boats up to 10m (33ft) are now available. All work was completed by autumn last year despite the many challenges posed by COVID-19 and national lockdown. Julian Seaman, Shoreham Port harbour master, praised the Walcon team for following strict protocols while working very efficiently, and reports a good start for the new system. “The new pontoons have weathered very well in the recent storms and we have received excellent feedback from our leisure users,” he said. “Features of our new facility include easier access via a double pontoon access bridge, wider pontoon fingers for ease of access to and from vessels, and improved lighting. The site will also offer enhanced security, with new fencing, keypad gate access, CCTV and extra lighting where required. We look forward to working with Walcon Marine again in the future,” he added. Management contract for Gunpowder Cove USA: Oasis Marinas has been awarded the management contract for Gunpowder Cove Marina in Joppa, Maryland. Gunpowder Cove, formerly Joppatowne Marina, is located just north of Baltimore near Bel Air, Maryland. The marina, which originally opened in 1966, is a full service facility on the Gunpowder River off the Chesapeake Bay. It has served as a premium location for boaters in the area throughout the years and gives boaters easy access to many nearby attractions. Oasis Marinas began management on 1 st January and is overseeing the day-to-day slip and marina management activities, boat services, facilities and grounds maintenance, marketing activities, new developments, and more. The company was formed by a group of boaters with executive expertise in hospitality and technology who are dedicated to creating a high-quality experience. The Oasis portfolio comprises nearly 40 properties, with a total of around 6,500 wet and dry slips. “Gunpowder Cove is an amazing facility,” says Oasis founder and CEO Dan Cowens. “We are thrilled to continue our growth in the Chesapeake Bay and add another great destination for our boaters.” www.marinaworld.com – March/April 2021 13
