Despite global economic and political uncertainty, the marina industry continued to thrive in 2018. With more marinas added in every region, improvements of the old and ambitious plans for the new, the industry is showing no signs of slowing down. Charlotte Niemiec gives a global view The Americas On the US east coast, Island Global Yachting (IGY Marinas) added Fore Points Marina in Portland, Maine to its portfolio. Upon completion this year, the facility will accommodate over 140 vessels and up to ten megayachts. With the addition of this new marina, the IGY network now stretches along the entire eastern coastline of the USA. Further south in Washington, DC, Oasis Marinas was awarded a contract to manage all marina operations along the entire Wharf development. The contract includes Market Docks, Wharf Cove, Washington Channel Moorings and the new mixed-use, 200+ slip Wharf Marina, currently being constructed by Bellingham Marine. In South Carolina, Grey Ghost Properties began the planning and design for Port Royal, a major marina development in Battery Creek. The company has permits to construct up to 250 slips at the site. In Florida, a US million, 150-berth deep water marina facility was planned for Tampa’s Westshore Marina District. It will be the largest new marina to be built in the Tampa Bay Area in many years and will have berths ranging from 35-100ft (11-30m). Pearl Homes received final approval to build Hunters Point Resort & Marina in Cortez, the state’s oldest fishing village. It will feature a private marina with 48 boat slips and other amenities. And Naples City Dock opened in early summer with a radical new facelift. The marina now has larger slips ranging from 30-60ft (9-18m), built to withstand 170mph winds. On the other side of the country, the largest marina in the US – Alamitos Bay Marina in California – completed the final phase of reconstruction on all of its 1,962 slips. Meanwhile, Suntex Marina Investors acquired two properties on the Trinity Lake Reservoir: the full-service Cedar Stock Resort Marina and Trinity Center Marina, an all-new 20-berth marina expected to open in June. In Los Angeles, a development opportunity opened up for Cabrillo Way Marina in San Pedro, with 700 slips and a 325-boat drystack. The company also added Oak Bottom Marina to its growing portfolio and acquired Hurricane Marina in Silver Point, Tennessee. Hurricane Marina has 600 wet slips, 40 PWC slips and 25 enclosed boathouse slips. Poralu Marine completed a marina at the heart of Puerto Escondido Bay in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Designed to harmonise completely with its spectacular natural surroundings, the project included private pontoons and a marina for over 100 boats. Further down, in Panama, the development of Ocean Reef Islands Marina progressed well. Build completed on the causeway and the islands, which are the first man-made islands to be built on Latin America’s Pacific coast. The project has added an additional 4km of coastline to the country of Panama and the current mix at the marina includes eight superyacht slips from 30-50m (98-164ft), 150 slips and 50 private docks. In the Caribbean, the Government of Grenada gave its support to a plan proposed by Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&N) to increase berthing capacity at its Port Louis Marina by Crossroads, the newest and largest resort in the Maldives, will feature a centrepiece marina. www.marinaworld.com - Suppliers & Services 2019/2020 5
